Forest Lawn...a piece of the puzzle!

The kids sitting at their Great- Great- Grandparents grave. Very cool!!

Last Saturday we spent about two and a half hours at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. We found (with the help of the office people and a map) my Great-Grandparents graves. I was SOOOOOO EXCITED!!! I have been doing genealogy ("Genealogy, I am doing it! My Genealogy....sing along!) and my mom and I are stuck here. We know Frances's mom and dad's name and where they are supposed to be from, but that is about it. (Except for a few siblings)
Frances's mother died when she was just 3 or 4, and she was raised by her father's Sister Emma, and her husband. It was such an amazing experience to sit at her grave. This woman whom I had thought so much about. My mother's Grandmother. I never knew her. She died five years before I was born, and yet I feel such a connection to her. I long to find her Mother and Father, her little brother that was sent to a different family after their mothers death, or her little sister; who died the day that she was born, when complications took their mothers life. I long to put all the pieces together and see the whole puzzle. Hopefully soon I'll find what I'm looking for.

  1. I am sooo relieved to know that I'm not the only one who takes pictures of their kids by headstones! I love family history. It sound like you have a good mystery on your hands. If you want any help, let me know!

  2. Thanks! I found William Hill's (Frances's father) sisters (3) marriage cert. a few weeks ago. That was amazing. I have William and Mary's marriage cert. but I can't find any death info on Mary or the baby, Betsy. It's like a big treasure hunt. I'd welcome any suggestions.

  3. Okay, I noticed that she had a totally different name in IGI. I guess that is because she was taken in by another family? Interesting. So the "Hill" was the biological last name?

  4. Yes, Frances's Aunt and Uncle changed her name from Kathrine, because they thought it sounded too Catholic. Crazy, huh. Although she kept her biological last name, and never swithched it to her Aunt's last name. I have been trying to find them in the census, but haven't had much luck. Bertam and Emma Wright are their names. (Chicago,Cook, Illinois) They never had any children. I did just find their marriage license last month, and that was exciting. If you have any ideas on how to find them, let me know. I'd love a fresh take on things.

  5. Oh, I am planning on trying city directories next. We have an amazing family history teacher in our ward. He is a professional who suggested it. He is very motivating.

  6. I'm laughing slightly because Frances sounds quite catholic to me too! Oh well, The city directory is a great way to go. Sounds like you are on the right track. I noticed from the headstone pictures that Peter was a mason. I'm not sure what kind of records the masons kept, but that may be an obscure avenue to try.
